May 23, 2013: Annual Catholic Campaign
In the coming weeks, Archbishop Mark Coleridge will be writing to you and others to introduce himself and to tell you about the Annual Catholic Campaign.

Gifts to the Campaign will support ministries that care for people in a variety of ways, including:

  • Families who dream of a Catholic education for their children but rule it out due to financial difficulties (The Mary MacKillop Catholic School Access fund)
  • People in need of the community and social services that the Church provides through Centacare
  • The men who are preparing for priesthood and will be our future parish priests
  • Priests who are ill or in retirement

May 9, 2013: Cyber Safety Presentation
During the week we had a visit from the cyber safety group reminding children never to give their passwords, phone numbers or addresses over the internet and every time someone asks for any details that they should show mum or dad. Solid advice.

This is the new stranger danger and all children need to be educated and aware of the problems that could occur. Please talk to your children often about this.

Mrs Morrissey and eight Year 7 students joined with over 3000 school children to commemorate ANZAC Day at the annual Commemoration Ceremony for students at ANZAC Square.

The children represented our school reverently and respectfully and were very proud to lay a wreath at the Flame of Remembrance. Congratulations Year 7!

Our Wynnum RSL manage the march from the corner of Bay Terrace and Cedar Street to the RSL car park leaving at 9.00am.

If we could meet at 8.30 please. All children are invited to participate in their school uniform, and parents are welcome to march with us. I will be at the start of the march to help organise the squad.

Looking forward to seeing you there showing off our school and supporting our community.

March 28, 2013: Miracle Man Easter Presentation
Last night our celebration for Easter, Miracle Man, was amazing. Thank you to all those Mums, Dads and Grandparents who made the effort to come along and support your children. The children were fantastic and Deb, Andrea and the teachers who pulled this all together were great. Thank you very much.

March 28, 2013: Bayside Catholic Schools Swimming Carnival
Our school was well represented by a small band of capable swimmers at the Bayside Catholic Schools Swimming Carnival. We have a series of photos of these wonderful swimmers displaying their winning ribbons. We received many comments of the wonderful behaviour and participation of these youngsters. Well done.

March 28, 2013: Interschool Cross Country
We were very lucky on Thursday to get through our cross country, the grounds were just dry enough and the rain held off for us. I am sure Mr Luke had been praying hard. It was a great event with the help of many parents and teachers. A big thanks to Steve and Caitlin who trained the children before school for weeks, and are continuing to do so for the next events. This day also relies heavily on the support of parents. Thank you very much for your time and efforts.

March 21, 2013: New playground complete...let's name it!
At last our new playground on the junior campus is ready and in use! There was a great deal of excitement when it opened last Monday. The playground is a true testament to the hard work and commitment of your P&F who have seen the project through from beginning to end. The P&F are running a competition this week and next for students to come up with a name for the playground. The name will be incorporated in a plaque which will be attached to the playground. Please encourage your children to put their thinking caps on to come up with a catchy name.

Students are invited to submit their ideas for a name for the playground that reflects the school, its history, or maybe the bayside area! So get creative and come up with a suggestion! The name of the playground will be incorporated into a plaque that will be placed in the playground, and there will be other small prizes to be won! Just write your suggestion on a piece of paper with your name and class group and hand in to your teacher or at either office. Entries close next Thursday 28th March. The winning playground name will be selected at the April P&F meeting by the admin team and P&F representatives.

March 14, 2013: News of a new Pope
Jorge Bergoglio, the former Archbishop of Buenos Aires in Argentina, has been elected our new Pope. He is the first pontiff from Latin America, the first non-European pope in the modern era and the first Jesuit. Elected by the Church's gathered cardinals in their fifth round of voting on the second day of their conclave, the result of the vote was heralded by white smoke rising from the chimney on the Sistine Chapel and the ringing of the Vatican bells. He will be known as Pope Francis – and this is the name of course of one of the most venerated figures in the Roman Catholic Church, St. Francis of Assisi. Francis is known as a "humble, spiritual and very intelligent" man with an instinctive feel for the poor, who led an austere life in Buenos Aires. He was born to Italian immigrant parents and was raised in the Argentine capital. In his first address to the crowds, he said, "It seems my brother cardinals went almost to the end of the world to choose a pope." He also asked people to pray for him. We join our prayers to all those around the world for his good health and wise and discerning leadership in the years ahead.

March 7, 2013: Prep 2014 Enrolments
We are now accepting applications for Prep 2014. To be eligible to commence Prep next year children must have turned 4 years old by 30 June 2013. If you know of neighbours or friends who are hoping to send their little one to Prep at Guardian Angels' next year, please make them aware that enrolment applications are now open. Current school families must still make applications for any children in the family who will be commencing with us in 2014.

Applications for enrolment close on Thursday 28 March, the final day of Term 1. All applications received after this date will be placed on a waiting list.

March 7, 2013: Sacrament of Reconciliation
Monday 11th of March, we have about sixty children receiving the sacrament of Reconciliation for the first time. While this is a parish program, it is happening in school time with the assistance of Deb, our APRE and the parish sacramental team. Congratulations girls and boys, it is a big day.

February 28, 2013: Parent Helpers needed to volunteer for the Support-A-Reader Program (SAR)
Our Support-A-Reader program for Years 3-7 needs parents who are willing to donate an hour or two per week to hear students read. We are looking for positive, caring volunteers to help our students become better readers!

These students need practice reading sessions and will benefit from having a reading tutor twice to three times a week. If you think you can help in this area, please contact us as soon as possible. We will be able to work around a time that suits you between 8.30am and 3.00pm. There will be an information/training session for new volunteers.

If you have always wanted to be involved in school life and have not been sure how to do this, signing up to help with the SAR program is your perfect opportunity! Please leave your name and number at the school front desk (either campus) if you are interested and we will contact you as soon as possible!

February 21, 2013: Project Compassion
Throughout the 6 weeks of Lent we support Caritas Australia in the work they do for International Aid and Development through Project Compassion. Due to the successful fundraising last year we have decided to use the theme “Loose Change” again this year. Our goal therefore is for children to bring in small amounts of loose change each week as outlined below:

  • 5 cent week: Wednesday 20th February - Tuesday 26th February
  • 10 cent week: Wednesday 27th February - Tuesday 5th March
  • 20 cent week: Wednesday 6th March - Tuesday 12th March
  • 50 cent week: Wednesday 13th March - Tuesday 19th March
  • Gold coin: Wednesday 20th March - Tuesday 26th March

Thank you for supporting such a worthy cause.

February 14, 2013: Season of Lent
On Wednesday we began the church’s season of Lent. Thanks to all the parents and other family member who were able to join us for our Ash Wednesday Liturgy. Taking time for personal prayer during Lent deepens our relationship with God and helps us to be more attuned to the world as seen through God’s eyes. Why do we fast during Lent? We fast to keep us mindful of all that we have and have received from God. It has become common to talk about fasting from things other than food, fasting from places and activities that consume our time. Fasting for a few hours from the internet or the demands of email can give us the time to be more reflective and more centered on God’s presence. Fasting is always in service to something else, it opens up time for prayer and reflection. And, particularly fasting from food makes us mindful of those who are hungry because of poverty, which serves as an important foundation of almsgiving.

February 14, 2013: Welcome BBQ Success
What a great night everyone had last Friday evening at our Welcome BBQ! It was a wonderful opportunity for new families to meet some "old faces" in a social setting. The P&F organised this event. They told us 360 sausages were cooked on the night. Thanks to our hard-working P&F for organising and funding this event.

February 7, 2013: Parent Partnerships Evening
Thank you to all those parents who came along to the Parent Partnership evenings last week and this week. We trust you found the sessions informative. Research shows that when parents and teachers work together, and especially when children see this happening, student learning outcomes are greatly enhanced. A big thank you to our teachers also for making themselves available for these sessions.
